No matter how good their risk management systems are, retailers can’t predict every threat or disruption. But they can make sure they’re prepared to respond to and mitigate such risks by utilizing real-time alerting solutions like Dataminr Pulse. With Pulse, which detects the earlier signals of emerging risks and high-impact events, retailers receive real time alerts on potential threats and crises—often within seconds or minutes of an incident occurring. They are then better able to protect their people, assets and locations and maintain business continuity.
Our team was alerted by Dataminr to an active shooter at the Houston Galleria Mall, where we have a store location. Dataminr was able to provide a constant flow of information that we were not able to secure at a local level, allowing us to make on-the-ground decisions. Every organization needs to prioritize their security and event response for situations like this.

Here we share several examples of how the real-time information Pulse provides has helped retailers mitigate and manage risk as events emerge and unfold.
Online Retail Fraud
Dataminr Pulse provides real-time alerts on a range of retail industry fraud, such as stolen account credentials, counterfeit goods and illicitly acquired gift cards. In the fourth quarter of 2020, Pulse surfaced 975 unique instances of retail industry fraud that impacted major high street retailers.
Retail Store Damage
January 3, 2021: A major retailer received a single alert from Pulse about an attempted burglary at one of their stores in Seattle, although the alarms had not been triggered. Security personnel acted immediately; they reviewed video footage that showed individuals attempting to break into the store. They then discovered that the alarms weren’t triggered because the store’s front glass had not shattered during the attempted break in. Being notified as soon as the incident occurred, which was over the weekend, allowed the security team to secure the premises ahead of the store’s Monday reopening.
Retail Smash and Grab
November 2021: There were a series of smash-and-grab robberies across California targeting various high end retailers. Dataminr Pulse alerted on each and every incident, giving clients real- time visibility into the events as they unfolded. Customers then began to restrict access to their stores and use alerts details, such as firsthand accounts and cross-corroborated information, to provide executives with a full and accurate view of the risks at hand.
Retail Reputational Risk
October 2020: During the height of COVID-19, Dataminr Pulse issued an alert on customers not wearing face masks as they entered a well known U.S. supermarket chain. This allowed the supermarket to stay ahead of potential reputational damage.
Retail Risk to People
February 2022: A hostage situation took place at a well known electronics store in Amsterdam that quickly escalated. Dataminr Pulse alerted the store’s global security operations center (SOC) who in turn were able to warn customers in the vicinity. The SOC took immediate action to safeguard employees and minimize disruption to operations.
Dataminr Pulse is a crucial tool used inside hundreds of the world’s leading security operations centers and global retailers. Pulse streamlines your team’s collaboration, response protocols and critical information flows— enabling real-time command and control as risks emerge and high- impact events unfold.
